शिवजन्म: ते दिवस फार धामधुमीचे होते. उत्तरेकडून मुघल बादशाहा शाहजहान याने दख्खन सर करण्यासाठी मोठे सैन्य रवाना केले होते. शहाजीराजांच्या जहागिरीचे गाव पुणे. विजापूरच्या आदिलशाहाने ते बेचिराख करून टाकले होते. शहाजीराजे अडचणीत सापडले होते. इकडे आड तिकडे विहीर ! शहाजीराजांच्या वाट्याला धावपळीचे आयुष्य आले.

अशात जिजाबाई गरोदर होत्या, तेव्हा या धामधुमीत आणि धावपळीत त्यांना ठेवायचे कुठे, हा प्रश्न उभा राहिला. शहाजीराजांना शिवनेरी किल्ल्याची आठवण झाली. जिजाबाईंना त्यांनी शिवनेरीवर ठेवायचे ठरवले. शिवनेरी हा पुणे जिल्ह्यातील जुन्नरजवळील किल्ला. त्याच्या चारी बाजूंना उंच कडे, भक्कम तटबंदी आणि बळकट दरवाजे होते. किल्ला मोठा मजबूत होता. विजयराज हे त्याचे किल्लेदार होते. ते भोसल्यांच्या नात्यातलेच होते. जिजाबाईंच्या रक्षणाची जबाबदारी त्यांनी स्वीकारली. तेव्हा शहाजीराजांनी जिजाबाईंना शिवनेरीवर ठेवले व ते मुघलांवर चालून गेले. 

.....आणि तो सोन्याचा दिवस उजाडला. फाल्गुन वद्य तृतीया शके १५५१ म्हणजेच इंग्रजी वर्षाप्रमाणे १९ फेब्रुवारी १६३०. शिवनेरीच्या नगारखान्यात सनई, चौघडा वाजत होता. अशा मंगल क्षणी जिजाबाईंच्या पोटी पुत्र जन्मला. किल्ल्यावर आनंदीआनंद झाला. बाळाचे बारसे झाले. शिवनेरी किल्ल्यावर जन्म झाला म्हणून बाळाचे नाव 'शिवाजी' ठेवले.

शिवरायांचे बालपण: शिवरायांच्या वयाची पहिली सहा वर्षे फार धावपळीत गेली; पण या धावपळीतहि जिजाबाईंनी शिवरायांना उत्तम शिक्षण दिले. सायंकाळी त्या सांजवात लावत.   शिवबांना जवळ घेत, मायेने कुरवाळत, त्यांना रामाच्या नि कृष्णाच्या, भीमाच्या नि अभिमन्यूच्या गोष्टी सांगत. तसेच कधी नामदेवांचे, कधी ज्ञानेश्वरांचे तर कधी एकनाथांचे अभंग म्हणून दाखवत. शिवरायांना शूर पुरुषांच्या गोष्टी आवडत. मोठे झाल्यावर त्यांच्यासारखे पराक्रम करावे असे त्यांना वाटे. जिजाबाई साधुसंतांच्या चरित्रांतील गोष्टीही सांगत. त्यातून त्यांच्या ठिकाणी साधुसंतांविषयी आदरबुद्धी निर्माण झाली. 

गरीब मावळ्यांची मुले शिवरायांबरोबर खेळायला येत. कधीकधी शिवबाही त्यांच्या झोपडीत जात. त्यांची कांदाभाकर आवडीने खात. त्यांच्याशी गमतीदार खेळ खेळत. मावळ्यांची मुले म्हणजे जणू रानातील पाखरे ! ती पोपट, कोकीळ, वाघ यांचे हुबेहूब आवाज काढत. मातीचे हत्ती व घोडे बनवणे, मातीचे किल्ले रचणे हे त्यांचे छंद ! लपंडाव, चेंडू, भोवरा हे त्यांचे नेहमीचे खेळ. शिवरायही त्या मुलांबरोबर हे खेळ खेळत. मावळ्यांच्या मुलांना शिवराय फारफार आवडायचे.

Shiva's birth: It was a very busy day. From the north, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had sent a large army to conquer the Deccan. Pune is the village of Shahaji Raja's Jahagiri. It was destroyed by Adilshah of Bijapur. Shahaji Raje was in trouble. Well here and there! Shahaji Raja had a hectic life.

When Ashat Jijabai was pregnant, the question arose as to where to keep her in this hustle and bustle. Shahaji Raja remembered Shivneri fort. He decided to keep Jijabai on Shivneri. Shivneri is a fort near Junnar in Pune district. It was surrounded by high walls and strong gates. The fort was very strong. Vijayraj was its fortifier. He was related to Bhosle. He accepted responsibility for Jijabai's protection. Then Shahaji Raja placed Jijabai on Shivneri and he marched on the Mughals.

..... and that golden day dawned. Falgun Vadya Tritiya Shake 1551 i.e. 19th February 1630 according to the English year. It was four o'clock in the morning in the town hall of Shivneri. At such a happy moment, Jijabai gave birth to a son. There was joy at the fort. The baby was born. The baby was named 'Shivaji' as he was born on Shivneri fort.

Shivaraya's childhood: The first six years of Shivaraya's life were very hectic; But even in this run, Jijabai gave a good education to Shivaraya. Getting dressed in the evening. Taking Shiva close, cuddling Maya, telling him the stories of Rama and Krishna, Bhima and Abhimanyu. Also sometimes showing Namdev, sometimes Dnyaneshwar and sometimes Eknath as Abhang. Shivaraya likes stories of brave men. When he grew up, he wanted to do the same. Jijabai also narrates the stories of the saints. This created respect for the saints in their place.

Children of poor Mavals coming to play with Shivaraya. Sometimes Shivbahi would go to his hut. He likes to eat Kandabhakar. Playing fun games with them. The children of Mavalya are like birds in the forest! She made the same sounds of parrots, crows and tigers. His hobbies are making clay elephants and horses, building clay forts! Lapandav, ball, vortex are his usual games. Shivrai was also playing this game with those children. The children of Mavalya loved Shivrai Farfar.
